Why Colour Fades Faster Than You Expect
Hair colour sits inside the hair shaft, and the outer layer (the cuticle) is what keeps it there. Every time that outer layer is roughed up — by hot water, harsh shampoo, heat tools, sun or friction — a little colour escapes. That is why two clients can walk out with the same shade and look completely different three weeks later.
A few things decide how fast your colour fades:
- The shade itself. Reds, pinks, burgundies and pastels tend to fade the fastest. Deeper browns and natural shades usually hold on longer.
- How porous your hair is. Hair that has been bleached, smoothened or heavily heat-styled takes colour quickly but also loses it quickly.
- How often you wash. Every wash takes a little colour with it.
- What your hair meets every day — water, sun, pool chlorine, heat tools.
The First Few Days After Colouring
The first wash matters more than any other. Colour needs a little time to settle, and many colourists suggest waiting around two to three days before shampooing. Follow whatever we tell you on the day, because it depends on the product and the service.
- Skip the shampoo for the first couple of days if you can. If you sweat a lot, a plain water rinse and conditioner is fine.
- Avoid swimming and very hot showers for the first week.
- Hold off on heavy oiling for the first week (more on oiling below).
- Go easy on straighteners and curling tongs in the first few days.
How to Care for Colour Treated Hair at Home: The Daily Routine
This is the part that keeps your colour looking salon-fresh. None of it takes extra time once it becomes a habit.
Switch to a colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo
Strong cleansing agents strip colour along with oil. A sulphate-free shampoo made for coloured hair is gentler. Shampoo your scalp, and let the lather run through the lengths rather than scrubbing them.
Wash less, and with cooler water
Hot water opens up the cuticle and lets colour out. Use lukewarm water to wash and finish with a cooler rinse. If you can stretch the gap between washes by a day, your colour will thank you.
Condition every single wash
Conditioner smooths the cuticle back down. Use it from mid-lengths to ends every time, and add a deeper mask once a week, especially on lightened or highlighted hair.
Protect before heat
Use a heat protectant before every dryer, straightener or curler, and keep the temperature on the lower side. High heat is one of the quickest ways to turn a rich shade dull or brassy.
Be gentle when hair is wet
Pat dry with a soft towel or old cotton T-shirt instead of rubbing. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends. Coloured hair is more fragile when wet.
The Kerala Factors: Water, Sun, Humidity and Pools
Most colour-care advice online is written for a different climate. Here is what actually changes for us in Kerala.
Hard water and borewell water
Many homes in and around Kozhikode use well or borewell water, and some of it is hard, which means it carries minerals. Over time those minerals can build up on the hair, making colour look flat, dull or slightly brassy, and making hair feel rough even after conditioning.
- A shower filter can help reduce what reaches your hair.
- For the final rinse, some clients use filtered or stored drinking water. It is a small step that helps.
- If build-up is heavy, a clarifying or anti-mineral shampoo can help occasionally, but these also lift colour. Use one only when needed, or ask us to time it just before your next colour appointment.
Sun
Strong sun fades colour and dries out the lengths, and in Kerala we get plenty of it for most of the year. If you are outdoors for long stretches — travel, a beach day, an outdoor wedding function — cover your hair with a scarf, dupatta or hat, and use a leave-in product that says it offers UV protection.
Humidity and the monsoon
Humidity itself does not strip colour, but it makes the cuticle swell and frizz, and frizzy hair reflects less light, so the colour looks duller. A light leave-in conditioner or serum on the lengths keeps things smooth. During the monsoon, try not to leave hair tied up damp for hours after getting caught in the rain. Dry it properly, roots first.
Chlorinated pools
Pool water can dull colour, and lightened or highlighted hair can sometimes pick up a greenish tinge. Before you swim, wet your hair with plain water and apply a little conditioner so it absorbs less pool water. Wear a cap if you swim often, and rinse and condition as soon as you are out.
Coconut oil and coloured hair: I am not going to tell you to stop oiling. Many of us grew up with it and a little oil on the lengths can make coloured hair feel softer. Two cautions: skip heavy oiling for the first week after colour, and remember that thick oil needs stronger or repeated shampooing to wash out — and that extra washing is what fades colour. A small amount on the mid-lengths and ends, left for a short time, is usually enough. Before a colour appointment, ask us when booking whether to come with oiled or freshly washed hair, because it depends on the service.
Keeping Tone Fresh: Purple Shampoo, Gloss and Toner
Colour does not only fade — it shifts. Brown and highlighted hair often turns warmer or brassier over time, and pinks and reds soften towards a washed-out shade.
- Purple or blue shampoo helps cancel yellow and orange tones in blonde, highlighted or balayage hair. Use it once a week or so, not every wash, or it can leave a dull cast. It is not meant for red, pink or burgundy shades.
- A salon gloss or toner refreshes the tone and adds shine without a full colour service. It is a good option when your root regrowth is still fine but the lengths look tired or brassy.
Book a gloss or toner when you notice the shade has changed from what you walked out with, or before a big event when you want the colour at its best. How often you need one depends on your shade and your routine, so we will suggest a timing once we see how your colour behaves.
When to Book Olaplex or a Repair Treatment
If your hair has been lightened, highlighted, coloured many times, or also has a smoothening or keratin history, it may need more than conditioner. Signs I look for:
- Ends that tangle easily or feel like straw even after conditioning
- Stretchy, gummy texture when wet
- Short broken pieces along the lengths
- Colour that fades within days of your appointment
Olaplex is a bond-building treatment we use in the salon, often alongside colour or lightening, to help protect and strengthen the hair. A hair spa or repair treatment between colour appointments also helps keep lengths in better condition. If breakage is already happening, read my guide on hair breakage after smoothening — much of the aftercare is the same for over-processed coloured hair.
Mistakes I See Most Often
- Washing with very hot water, especially in the rainy season
- Using an ordinary anti-dandruff or clarifying shampoo every day
- Straightening every morning without heat protection
- Colouring at home over salon colour, which can leave uneven bands that are hard to correct
- Booking a chemical service like smoothening right after colouring without telling your stylist. If you are planning both, read my comparison of smoothening, keratin and Hair Botox and plan the order with us.
Scalp itching, burning or redness after colouring is not something to put up with. Rinse well and speak to a dermatologist, and tell us before your next appointment. This is also why we patch test before every colour service, even for regular clients, and why you should patch test any new hair product at home.
