Why Small Habits Add Years
Makeup ages you when it does one of three things: it sits on top of the skin instead of melting into it, it pulls attention to lines and shadows, or it drains warmth and colour from the face. Every mistake below falls into one of these. The good news is that each fix is small. You do not need new products for most of them — just a different way of using what you already have.
Mistake 1: Too Much Powder, Everywhere
Why it ages
In Kerala, the instinct is to powder the whole face heavily so you do not look shiny. The problem is that powder settles into every fine line, the creases around the eyes and the smile lines. By afternoon, heat and sweat mix with that powder and it turns patchy and cakey. Skin that looks dry and dusty always reads older than skin that has a little life to it.
The fix
- Prep first. A light, non-greasy moisturiser, given a few minutes to sink in, stops powder from clinging to dry patches.
- Powder only where you actually get oily — usually the centre of the forehead, the sides of the nose and the chin. Leave the outer cheeks and under-eyes almost bare.
- Use a fluffy brush and press, not rub. Tap off the excess before it touches your face.
- For touch-ups during the day, blot first with blotting paper or a clean tissue. Adding more powder on top of sweat is what creates the cake.
My rule for humid days: blot, don’t pile. Two blotting sheets in your handbag will do more for a long function than a compact.
Mistake 2: Foundation That Is Too Heavy or Not Your Shade
Why it ages
A thick layer of foundation flattens the face. It hides the natural variation in your skin — the warmth on the cheeks, the slight glow on the high points — and that flatness looks mask-like. When the shade or undertone is wrong, it gets worse: too light gives a grey or ashy cast, and a foundation that oxidises in the heat can turn orange by lunchtime. Both make skin look dull and tired.
The fix
- Match foundation on your jawline, not your hand, and check it near a window in daylight. It should disappear into your neck.
- Use less than you think. Apply a thin layer in the centre of the face and blend outwards, then conceal only the spots that need it.
- For everyday wear, a skin tint or a sheer layer is often enough. Let some of your real skin show through.
If you have a deeper or dusky skin tone and have always struggled with an ashy finish, I have written a separate guide on choosing foundation for dusky Indian skin that goes through undertones and mixing shades step by step.
Mistake 3: Heavy, Too-Light Under-Eye Concealer
Why it ages
This is the one I correct most often. A thick concealer two or three shades lighter than your skin does not hide dark circles — it turns them grey and draws a bright triangle straight to the eyes. The skin under the eye is thin and moves every time you smile or blink, so a heavy product cracks into creases within an hour. Those creases are what people notice.
The fix
- If your darkness is brown, blue or purple, a small amount of peach or orange colour corrector first will neutralise it far better than a pale concealer.
- Choose a concealer close to your skin tone — at most a touch lighter — and apply it only where the shadow is, usually the inner corner.
- Pat it in with your ring finger or a damp sponge. Less product means less creasing.
- Set with the smallest amount of fine powder, or skip it entirely if your under-eyes are dry.
Mistake 4: Harsh Brows and Liner Drawn All the Way Round
Why it ages
Brows frame the whole face. When they are filled in as solid blocks, drawn too thin, or coloured a shade darker than your hair, they look stamped on and make the expression look stern. Kajal and liner smudged all round the eye, especially on the lower lash line, closes the eye in. Smaller eyes and a heavy frame read as tired, and by evening that lower liner has usually smudged into the under-eye area, adding shadow where you least want it.
The fix
- Fill brows with light, hair-like strokes, only in the gaps. Start the front of the brow softer and keep the tail sharper.
- Brush the brows upwards with a clean spoolie so they look fuller and lifted.
- Keep liner mainly on the upper lash line. If you love kajal, tightline the upper waterline or keep the lower line to the outer third.
- In the heat, choose smudge-resistant formulas and do a patch test on the inner arm before using anything new near the eyes.
Mistake 5: Dry, Dark, Over-Lined Lips
Why it ages
Fully matte lipsticks look beautiful on the first day of wear, but on lips that are already dry they cling to every vertical line. A lip liner much darker than the lipstick, left visible once the colour fades, outlines the lips and makes them look thinner. Very dark, flat shades used every day can do the same.
The fix
- Exfoliate gently with a soft cloth and apply lip balm while you do the rest of your makeup. Blot it before lipstick.
- Pick a liner that matches your natural lip or your lipstick, and fill it slightly into the lip so there is no visible edge when the colour wears off.
- For daily wear, try a satin or cream finish, or a lip tint. Save the very matte shades for functions and photographs.
- Add a little colour back to the cheeks with a cream blush placed on the apples and blended up towards the cheekbones — it balances the lips and brings warmth back to the face.
Makeup Mistakes That Make You Look Older: Quick Reference
If you only remember one thing from each section, make it this:
| Mistake | Why it ages | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Too much powder | Settles into lines, turns cakey in humidity | Moisturise, powder only the T-zone, blot to touch up |
| Heavy or wrong foundation | Flat, mask-like, grey or orange cast | Match at the jawline in daylight, apply thin |
| Light, thick concealer | Greys out circles, creases | Colour correct, near-match shade, tiny amount |
| Harsh brows and liner | Stern expression, eyes look smaller | Hair-like strokes, liner on the upper line |
| Dry, over-lined lips | Shows lines, lips look thinner | Prep with balm, matching liner, softer finish |
A Simple Everyday Routine That Avoids All Five
This is roughly what I would suggest for a working day in Kozhikode. It takes very little time once you are used to it.
Prep the skin
Cleanse, apply a light moisturiser and sunscreen, and give them a few minutes to settle before anything else goes on.
Even out, don’t cover
A thin layer of foundation or skin tint in your exact shade, then spot concealer only where needed.
Brighten the eyes gently
Colour correct if needed, a small amount of concealer at the inner corner, and liner on the upper lash line.
Bring back warmth
Soft brows, a touch of cream blush and a comfortable lip colour over balm.
Set only where you shine
Press a little powder into the T-zone and carry blotting paper for the rest of the day.
