How to Do a Facial at Home Between Salon Visits

Consistent home care helps keep skin fresh between salon facials
"My skin looked so good after the facial. Why does it fade so fast?" Clients ask me this often, and the honest answer is that a salon facial is one good day for your skin, while your home care is every other day. If you have been wondering how to do a facial at home between salon facials, this is the routine I suggest. It will not replace a professional treatment — some things, like deep extraction and machine-based cleansing, belong in a salon — but it will help you keep your skin clean, calm and fresh until your next visit, using products you can find at a good pharmacy or beauty store in Kozhikode.

What a Home Facial Can and Cannot Do

I want to be clear about this before the steps, because it saves a lot of disappointment.

A home facial can:

A home facial should not try to:

My honest view: home care maintains; it does not replace. The aim of this routine is to keep the results of your salon facial for longer, not to reproduce the salon treatment in your bathroom.

How to Do a Facial at Home Between Salon Facials

Once a week is enough for most skin types. If your skin is sensitive, every ten days to two weeks is gentler. Do it in the evening, when you do not need to step out into the sun afterwards.

1

Remove everything first

Take off makeup and sunscreen with a cleansing balm, cleansing oil or micellar water. Tie your hair back and wash your hands. A facial on top of leftover makeup only pushes it around.

2

Cleanse gently

Follow with your regular mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Massage for about a minute, rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel.

3

Exfoliate — lightly

Use either a gentle chemical exfoliant (a mild AHA or PHA product made for home use) or a soft scrub with fine grains. Not both. If your skin is sensitive, active with breakouts, or you use prescription skincare, skip this step or ask your dermatologist.

4

A little warmth, not a steam blast

Hold a clean face towel soaked in warm (not hot) water against your face for a minute. This feels relaxing and softens the skin. I do not recommend leaning over a pot of boiling water — it is easy to overheat or irritate the skin, especially if you have redness or sensitivity.

5

Mask for your skin type

Choose one mask that matches what your skin needs this week (see the table below). Follow the time on the pack and rinse before it dries and cracks.

6

Gentle massage

With a few drops of a light facial oil or your moisturiser, massage in slow upward and outward strokes for two or three minutes. Keep the pressure light around the eyes. This is the part clients enjoy most in the salon, and it is easy to do at home.

7

Hydrate and moisturise

Apply a hydrating serum or toner while the skin is still slightly damp, then your usual moisturiser. If moisturiser never seems to be enough for you, read why your moisturiser might not be working.

Choosing a Mask You Can Find Locally

You do not need imported products. Most of these types are easy to find in pharmacies and beauty stores in Kozhikode and across Kerala.

About kitchen remedies

Many of us grew up with home packs made from besan, curd, turmeric or aloe vera. Some people find these soothing, and that is fine — but patch test first, keep them simple and rinse them off completely. I would avoid lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste and undiluted essential oils on the face. They can irritate the skin, and turmeric can leave a stain.

Patch test every new product. Apply a small amount behind the ear or on the inner arm for a couple of days before using it on your face. Stop if you see redness, itching, burning or bumps.

The Daily Habits That Matter More Than the Weekly Facial

A weekly home facial helps, but these daily habits do more to keep your skin looking cared for:

If you want the full day-to-day version, I have written a skincare routine for humid weather in Kerala with adjustments for each skin type.

Mistakes That Undo Your Salon Facial

When to Book Your Next Salon Facial

How often you need a professional facial depends on your skin and your goals, so I would rather look at your skin than give everyone the same number. Signs that it is time: your pores feel congested even with good home care, your skin looks dull despite exfoliating, or you have an event coming up. For brides, facials are planned into the bridal beauty timeline well ahead of the wedding, never in the last few days.

At the salon we choose the facial for your skin — a Deep Cleansing Facial or a HydraFacial, for example — and we will tell you what to do at home until the next visit.

At Popyz Beauty Lounge on Gandhi Road, Kozhikode, every facial starts with a look at your skin and a conversation about your routine. We would rather recommend a simpler treatment that suits you than a bigger one that does not. If a concern needs a dermatologist, we will say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Once a week is enough for most skin types, and every ten days to two weeks is gentler for sensitive skin. Doing it more often, especially with exfoliants, can leave skin irritated.
No. A home facial helps maintain clean, hydrated skin, but it cannot offer the deep cleansing, professional products and trained assessment of a salon facial. Think of it as care between visits rather than a substitute.
Holding a warm, damp towel on your face for a minute is a gentle option. Steaming over boiling water can overheat or irritate the skin and is best avoided, especially if you have redness or sensitivity.
It is better not to squeeze blackheads or whiteheads or use extraction tools at home, as this can lead to marks and infection. Regular gentle cleansing and exfoliation help, and extractions are best left to a trained professional.
Give your skin a few days of gentle care first and follow the aftercare advice you were given at the salon. Avoid scrubs and exfoliants right after a professional facial because your skin has already been exfoliated.
Many people use simple packs like besan, curd or aloe vera without problems, but patch test first and rinse them off completely. Avoid lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste and undiluted essential oils on the face, and see a dermatologist if you have a skin condition.
