Start With What You Can See: Hygiene
You do not need a lab report to judge hygiene. Spend five minutes in the salon before your appointment and watch.
- Fresh towels and capes for every client. A used towel folded back onto the shelf is a warning sign.
- Tools cleaned between clients. Combs, brushes, scissors, tweezers and nail tools should be cleaned or sanitised after each person, not wiped on an apron.
- Waxing done without double-dipping. A spatula that has touched skin should not go back into the wax pot.
- Clean makeup kits. Brushes washed, lipsticks and creams taken out with a spatula, not applied straight from the tube to one face after another.
- Clean floors, basins and chairs, and hair swept between clients.
If you are shy to ask, you can still watch. A good salon will not mind the question at all.

The person doing it should ask about your hair history, previous colour or treatments, skin sensitivity and any allergies, and should look at your hair and scalp before recommending anything.
Two tests matter most:
- Patch test: a small amount of the product on the skin, checked before the full service, to look for a reaction.
- Strand test: the product on a small section of hair, to see how your hair takes it and whether it can handle the treatment.
A salon that skips these to save time is taking a risk with your hair and skin. If you have a skin condition, a scalp problem or are pregnant, speak to a dermatologist or doctor before any chemical service. My rule: if nobody asks about your hair history before putting chemicals on it, stop and ask them to test first. It is your hair, and a patch test and strand test are a normal request.
Ask What Products They Use
It is fair to ask which brands will go on your hair and face, and a confident salon will tell you. Professional salon ranges are made for salon use, and a good team will know which product suits which hair or skin type. Look for sealed, labelled products rather than unmarked bottles, and ask to see the box if you are curious. - Consistency over months, not just a handful of standout photos.
- Brides from different kinds of weddings, if you are a bride, so you can see how they handle a Nikah, a muhurtham or a church wedding look.

A trial is where you and your artist agree on the look before the day, with no pressure. Bring your saree or outfit, dupatta or hijab, and your jewellery or photos of them. - Is this the full cost, or will extras be added (a treatment mask, extra product for long hair, a different brand)?
- For bridal work, how many functions, how many looks, and whether hairstyling, draping and touch-ups are included?
- What happens if you want to add something mid-service?
A good salon explains this clearly and never adds services without asking you first.
