First, What Each One Actually Is
Part of the confusion is that "gel" means different things in different salons. So let me be clear about the terms I use.
Acrylic
A liquid and a powder mixed together and shaped on the nail or over a tip. It hardens in the air, no lamp needed. The strongest and most rigid of the three, and good for long lengths.
StrongestBuilder Gel
A thicker gel that is built up and cured under a UV or LED lamp. Used as a strengthening overlay on natural nails or to add some length. Slightly flexible, lighter than acrylic.
BalancedGel Polish / Soft Gel
Gel polish is a thin, glossy colour cured under a lamp on your own nails. Soft gel extensions are pre-shaped gel tips fixed with gel. The lightest and most natural feel.
LightestGel vs Acrylic vs Builder Gel Nails: Side by Side
This is a general comparison. The skill of the technician and how you treat your nails affect every row.
| Gel polish / soft gel | Builder gel | Acrylic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Thin, light, natural | Light, slightly flexible | Thicker, hard, rigid |
| Strength | Least — can chip with hard use | Good for everyday use | Highest — best for long lengths |
| Best length | Natural to medium | Short to medium | Medium to long |
| Curing | UV/LED lamp | UV/LED lamp | Air-hardens |
| Smell | Mild | Mild | Stronger smell during application |
| Removal | Soak-off with acetone | Filed down; some types soak off | Filed down, then soaked in acetone |
| Upkeep | Removal or redo every few weeks | Infill as your nail grows | Infill as your nail grows |
Most people come back every two to four weeks for an infill or removal, depending on how fast their nails grow and how the set is holding up. Leaving extensions on much longer lets the weight shift forward as the nail grows, which makes them more likely to lift or break.
Which One Suits Your Lifestyle
This is how I think about it in the chair. I ask what your hands do every day, then suggest a system, length and shape to match.
If you cook a lot
Grating coconut, cleaning fish, kneading dough for chapati or pathiri, washing vessels — Kerala kitchens are hard on nails. I usually suggest builder gel on your natural nails, or short gel extensions, in a rounded or squoval shape. Long acrylics and pointed shapes get in the way and catch on everything. Food and dough can also collect under long tips, so shorter is more hygienic. Wear rubber gloves for washing up; water and detergent are one of the main reasons sets lift early.
If you type or use your phone all day
Office work, college, accounts, content work — short to medium builder gel or gel polish is the comfortable choice. Keep the tip rounded so you can type with your fingertips. Very long nails change how you type, and it takes time to adjust.
If you want length and drama for an event
For a wedding, a reception or a party where you want long, sculpted nails, acrylic or a well-built gel extension holds length best. If you are a bride, time your appointment close to the wedding and plan it alongside everything else in my 6-month bridal beauty plan. Think about how you will manage gold bangles, heavy jewellery and mehendi with long nails — I will help you choose a length you can actually live with.
If you have young children or do a lot of housework
Short, rounded builder gel is usually the sweet spot. It strengthens weak nails without the length that scratches little ones or snaps during chores.
If your natural nails are thin or peeling
Start with a builder gel overlay on your own nails at a short length. It gives them a protective layer while they grow. Heavy extensions on already weak nails are not where I would start.
A note on wudu and prayer
Some clients ask how nail polish or extensions fit with wudu. That is a religious question, and views differ, so please check with your own religious guidance — it is not something I should decide for you. If you prefer to go without product, a regular manicure keeps natural nails shaped, clean and healthy, and we are happy to plan appointments around what you decide.
Removal: Where Most Nail Damage Really Happens
Clients often blame gel or acrylic for thin, weak nails. In my experience, the damage usually comes from how they were removed.
Never peel or pick off gel or acrylic. When you peel, the product takes the top layers of your natural nail with it. That is what leaves nails thin, white-patched, bendy and sore. If a set lifts or breaks, file it short or cover it and book a proper removal.
Break the top layer
The shiny top coat is gently filed so the remover can get through. With acrylic and builder gel, most of the bulk is filed down first.
Soak or file off the rest
Soak-off products are wrapped with acetone and left to soften, then eased away. Products that do not soak off are carefully filed. Nothing should be forced or scraped hard.
Rehydrate
Acetone is drying. Wash your hands, then apply cuticle oil and a hand cream. Keep up the cuticle oil daily between appointments too.
Keeping Your Natural Nails Healthy
- Use cuticle oil daily. It keeps both the product and your natural nail more flexible and less likely to crack.
- Do not use your nails as tools — for opening cans, scraping labels or prising lids.
- Do not ignore lifting. Water can collect under a lifted edge. Book an infill or removal rather than gluing it at home.
- Take a break if your nails feel sore or very thin. Short natural nails with a manicure for a few weeks can do a lot of good.
- Protect your skin under the lamp. If UV exposure worries you, apply sunscreen to your hands beforehand or bring a pair of fingerless gloves to wear during curing.
Redness, itching, swelling or blisters around the nails after a gel or acrylic service can be an allergic reaction to the products. Remove the product properly, stop using it, and see a dermatologist. Tell us too, so we can avoid that product in future. Signs of infection — pain, pus, or green or dark discolouration under the nail — also need a doctor, not another set.
