First, Every Family’s Nikah Is Different
Malabar Muslim weddings are not one fixed format, and I never assume. In some families the bride is present when the Nikah is performed; in others she is not, and her big moments come later, at the reception or when she arrives at the groom’s home. Some brides wear a full hijab, some a dupatta draped over the head, some change looks between functions. The mylanchi (mehendi) night may be a day or two before, or the evening before.
So my first question at a trial is always about your schedule: what time you need to be ready, how many hours the day runs, whether there is an outfit change, and where you will be photographed. The plan for the makeup comes from those answers, not from a template.
A note on prayer: Many brides I work with pray during the wedding day and ask how makeup fits with wudu. That is a personal and family decision, and I don’t make it for you. Tell me at the trial what you plan to do, and we will build the look and the timing around it, including what needs to be redone afterwards.
Skin Prep: The Part Nobody Sees
Makeup lasts longer on skin that is calm, hydrated and not freshly irritated. Most of that work happens in the weeks before, not on the morning itself.
- No new products in the last two weeks. No new serums, peels or at-home masks. If you want to try something, patch test it well in advance.
- Final facial about a week before, not the day before. Skin needs time to settle after any treatment.
- Threading and waxing a few days ahead, so any redness has gone down.
- Hydrate from the inside and out. Water, sleep where you can, and a simple moisturiser morning and night.

Building a Base for Long Wear and Kerala Humidity
Kozhikode humidity is the main reason bridal makeup slides. Add a crowded hall, a heavy outfit and camera lights, and the skin will produce oil and sweat no matter what. The goal is a base that stays put and still looks like skin.
Light, water-based hydration
A gel or lotion moisturiser that sinks in fully. Heavy creams feel nice in air-conditioning but tend to break down in humid heat.
Primer by zone
A mattifying primer only where you get oily (usually forehead, nose and chin) and a hydrating one on drier areas. One primer for the whole face rarely suits everyone.
Long-wear foundation in thin layers
Two thin layers pressed in last far better than one thick one. Thick layers crease, separate and show every pore under video lights.
Set in stages
Concealer set immediately, powder only where it is needed, then a setting spray. I set the edges of the face carefully because that is where the hijab or dupatta rubs.

Hijab, Dupatta and Pinning Considerations
Fabric around the face is the biggest enemy of long lasting Nikah bridal makeup. Every time a hijab is adjusted, it can lift foundation from the jawline and forehead. A little planning prevents most of this.
- Decide the drape before the trial. Bring the actual hijab, underscarf or dupatta to your trial so we can see where it sits against your face.
- A soft cotton underscarf helps absorb sweat at the hairline and keeps a silk or net hijab from slipping.
- Makeup first, drape second. I finish and set the face, then the hijab goes on, then I clean up and re-set any edges it touched.
- Pins away from the face. Pins that sit close to the cheek or jaw get adjusted all day. I prefer placements that are secure without needing constant fixing.
- Plan for jewellery. A maang tikka, jhumkas or a passa sit on or around the fabric. We place them at the trial so the drape and the jewellery work together.
- Neck and ears. If your neck will be covered, I keep product there minimal so it does not transfer onto fabric.
Eyes and Lips That Survive Meals and Tears
Nikah days are emotional. Mothers, grandmothers, sisters: there will almost always be tears at some point, often more than once. And there will be a meal, sometimes several.
Eyes
- Waterproof mascara and liner. Non-negotiable for a long, emotional day.
- Eyeshadow primer on the lids so colour does not crease or fade in the heat.
- Careful lower lash line. Heavy kajal on the waterline can smudge downward when you cry. I usually keep it softer and more defined at the outer corner.
- Lashes applied securely. If you wear strip lashes, they are set well at the corners, which are the first place to lift.
Lips
- Liner over the whole lip as a base, not just the edges. When the lipstick wears, the colour underneath still looks intentional.
- A stain or long-wear matte underneath, with your chosen shade on top if you want more shine.
- Blot, don’t wipe, after eating. Oily dishes break down lipstick quickly, so blot gently and reapply.
When you cry: press a folded tissue gently under the eye and hold it there. Don’t wipe sideways. Pressing lifts the tears; wiping moves the makeup.
The Touch-Up Kit I Give Brides
Someone close to you (a sister, cousin or friend) should carry this and know when to step in. You will not remember to check a mirror.
- Blotting papers, which remove oil without adding more powder
- Pressed powder in your matched shade, for the T-zone only
- Your exact lipstick and lip liner
- Cotton buds and a small bottle of micellar water for smudges
- Tissues and a mini setting spray
- Spare hijab pins and safety pins
Before the reception, if there is a gap, I prefer a proper touch-up over a full redo: blot, lightly re-powder, fix the eyes, refresh the lips. The makeup ends up looking fresher than if we started again from scratch.
Photography Lighting: Plan for Every Kind
A single Nikah day can be photographed in soft morning light at home, under yellow hall lights at lunch, and with bright LED video lights and flash at the reception. Makeup has to hold up in all of them.

At your trial we take photos with and without flash, so you see exactly how the look reads on camera before the day.
